Why Glint and Glare Matters in Irish Planning
Of all the technical issues raised in Irish solar planning applications, glint and glare is the most misunderstood — by applicants, objectors, and sometimes planners themselves. A professional assessment addresses this head-on.

1. Will panels dazzle road users?
This is by far the most common concern. Panels are designed with anti-reflective coatings that significantly reduce specular reflection. A proper ray-tracing assessment can confirm whether any angles exist where road users might experience glare — and these are typically rare and brief given typical panel orientations.
2. What about neighbouring house windows?
Residential impacts depend on panel orientation, tilt angle, and the position of neighbouring properties. Our assessments identify any potential sun path alignments that could cause specular reflection toward dwelling windows.
3. Do pilots and aircraft get affected?
Aviation is a legitimate concern addressed by the IAA. We follow IAA guidelines precisely: if a site is within the study zone of an airport or aerodrome, we conduct a dedicated aviation glint assessment. Most ground-mounted solar farms at standard tilt angles do not present aviation risks.
4. Are anti-reflective panels mandatory?
Not mandatory under planning law, but frequently required as a planning condition. Anti-reflective glass with surface reflectance below 4% (vs 8% for standard glass) typically resolves borderline cases. It adds a small cost premium but significantly reduces planning risk.
5. What modelling software is used?
We use industry-standard 3D ray-tracing software combined with astronomical sun-path data for the specific site coordinates and grid reference. Results are expressed as luminance values (cd/m²) and compared against established thresholds.
6. How far away do impacts typically extend?
Specular reflection from tilted panels is directional and time-limited. In practice, significant impacts are rarely experienced beyond 500m. Our ZTV (Zone of Theoretical Visibility) analysis establishes the theoretical maximum extent.
7. What about cumulative impacts from multiple solar farms?
If there are other solar farms in the vicinity, cumulative glint impacts may need to be assessed. This is more common in areas where solar development has been concentrated.
8. Can landscaping mitigate glint impacts?
Yes. Hedgerow and tree planting can screen residential receptors from reflected light. We often design mitigation planting schemes alongside the glint and glare assessment.
9. Is a ZTV sufficient or do I need a full assessment?
A ZTV alone is rarely sufficient. A ZTV identifies where panels are theoretically visible, but it does not determine whether glare would actually occur from those locations. A full ray-tracing assessment is needed for applications where glint is a material concern.
10. How long does an assessment take?
